September 1 Lancaster County Pasture Rule Training
PCO is hosting meetings across Pennsylvania to discuss Access to Pasture Rule regulations and recordkeeping
requirements. Bring your Farm Map, Feed Rations records, and Pasture Access records and get your questions answered about your pasture management or dry matter intake! Training Topics include: Regulation overview, Changes to the OSP, Recordkeeping, What to expect at inspections, How to Calculate Dry Matter Intake, and Pasture Management Plans. Registration is free for all PCO members and their guests. Non-members will be charged a $40 membership fee. Lunch and training materials will be provided. September 9 PASA Field Day: The Day-to-Day Realities of Grazing and Handling Sheep Join PASA for a day on the Owens Farm, a 112 acre family-run sheep farm owned by Caroline and David Owens. The morning session will focus on the details and challenges of rotationally grazing sheep while the afternoon will focus on the realities of handling sheep, both as a flock and individually. September 11 PASA Field Day: Sugar & Sang: Maple & Ginseng Husbandry on Your Forestlands In a combination of indoor presentations and afternoon woods walks, participants will learn about forest stewardship, collection and processing, marketing and financial considerations, as well as ecological relationships around maple syrup and American ginseng. Presented by Eric Burkhart, instructor and plant science program director of Shavers Creek Environmental Center and Robert Hansen, County Extension Director in Tioga County and Extension Educator in Forest Resources and Maple Production with Penn State Cooperative Extension. Saint Rose Academy School Auditorium. 9am-4pm. Cost is $25 for PASA members, $35 all others. Lunch and ginseng stock will be provided.

September 15 Sheep Management Course. This is an eight evening, sixteen hour class entirely devoted to the care and management of sheep. The course begins on September 15 and goes through November 3 on Wednesday evenings. Each evening will focus on a different subject related to sheep production. You will hear from Melanie Dietrich Cochran of Keswick Creamery, Brad Parker of Pipe Dreams Fromage, and Candace Walker of Caprine Delight. 10am-4pm. October 5, 12, 19, 26 Exploring the Small Farm Dream This is a 4 evening, 12 hour course designed to help participants answer the questions Is starting an agricultural business right for me? Participants will discuss current opportunities in small-scale agriculture, explore objectives, assess personal and financial resources, conduct preliminary market research, and develop an action plan for pursing their interests in food and farming.
