Working as a contract inspector offers a flexible career path, especially for those interested in supporting organic farmers and processors in their region. Contract inspectors set their schedules and workloads, dividing their time between conducting on-site inspections and completing office-based report writing.
This role is well-suited for individuals with experience in farming, food safety, or regulatory compliance. Contract Organic Inspectors assess whether the organic production and handling practices of farms or businesses seeking certification comply with USDA National Organic Standards.
This work includes inspecting fields, livestock, facilities, and equipment. They identify potential contamination and commingling risks, evaluate pest management practices, and audit production and sales records. An organic inspector may specialize as either a farm or processing inspector, or both. While inspectors provide thorough documentation and reports, they do not make certification decisions themselves; instead, they supply essential information that guides certification authorities.
