Matt has worked for over two decades in service of the organic food and agricultural trade from a number of different multifunction leadership roles. It started when he wandered into Healthy Living Market in Burlington while a student at the University of Vermont and accelerated with an impactful stint at Onion River Cooperative after graduating. Drawn to learning more about how the larger food system worked, he seized on an opportunity to move to the west coast shortly thereafter.
During his time on the west, Matt first worked with New Leaf Community Markets, a 9-store natural grocery chain in Santa Cruz, California as Director of Produce. He also held leadership roles as Director of Account Management for Organically Grown Company in Portland, Oregon, in service of a sales team of 30+ members and as VP & General Manager for Awe Sum Organics, also in Santa Cruz, working cross functionally with a focus on representing organic producers to large retail accounts. More recently, Matt has been working back in Vermont, as Managing Director for a startup regional brand co-owned by four non-profit food hubs. In aggregating product from small and mid-sized organic farms under a unified brand, Vermont Way Foods successfully launched into multiple major retail markets in the fall of 2023 and 2024.
With this work, Matt has been beyond grateful for the many opportunities to engage with so many amazing people working in the organic trade, including time as a food and agriculture columnist for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, serving as the BOD Chair for OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute), as BOD President for the SFTA (Sustainable Food Trade Association) and as a BOD member for the Homeless Garden Project (Santa Cruz, CA).
In his spare time, Matt spends as much of it as possible outdoors, paddling, skiing, hiking with family dog Timber, working in the yard, and being with his wife Chana and their two teenage kids West and Mesa, one of whom just moved off to college at Western Washington University this fall. He’s also recently picked up a new habit of reading sci-fi and fantasy books during the cold VT winters and is making very slow progress playing around with a Ukelele.
