Organic dairy production is based on 3 basic ideas: healthy soil, natural immunity through ecological diversity, and organic system integrity. Transition to organic dairying requires the development of an organic system plan (OSP). Organic certification of the land requires a transition period of three years from the last application of a prohibited substance, one year of continuous organic management of livestock, and yearly inspections.
A good source of information for organic dairy production is eXtension Introduction to Organic Dairy Farming, with accurate, up-to-date, and relevant information from university experts, extension and other educators, organic farmers, veterinarians, and consultants.
